I've had my eye on this game for months, and finally with a 20% off sale at JB Hi-Fi, bought Import Tuner Challenge for a cheap $7. A part of the Tokyo Xtreme/Highway Racer series, I played the game almost non-stop on the weekend. It's just fun, and not as floaty as previous entries in the series. Recommended!

It Does Everything, Except Babysitting

Eurogamer has an article about Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America who says that Nintendo makes "babysitting tools." Presumably because of all the kids games that Nintendo makes - you know, the ones that look a lot like Sony's LittleBigPlanet. He then goes on to say that "no self-respecting 20-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with [a Nintendo DS]."

Which is probably true, though unfortunately for Sony, twenty-somethings are using their iPhone 4's instead.

3DS Black Screen of Death

So this happened to me last night - the 3DS Black Screen of Death. It pops up and you have to power off your 3DS. I was playing Ghost Recon Shadow Wars when it happened (twice). It may have something to do with brightness and power save, as I had turned up the brightness to 5 (from 3, my usual setting) and activated the power save option. When I went back to my original settings, the game ran fine.

3DS StreetPass - First Encounters

Tried out the StreetPass function yesterday and managed to score four Mii's inside an EB Games, perhaps not surprisingly. Got another three at lunch time today - all of whom where female (possibly not IRL). TIP: Before you start cruising with StreetPass, you need to play the Puzzle and Quest games at least once. The new Mii's won't show up in those games otherwise.

Note the grey-haired Mii second from the right. I smiled when he introduced himself as our ex-Prime Minister.

Lego Indiana Jones

I gave up on this game. Even the allure of easy achievements wasn't enough for me. I understand why these Lego games are popular, but I just can't get into them. I know some people think I'm nuts to be playing "crap" games like Terminator Salvation, but I had fun playing that. However, I just can't find any fun in the Lego games. To me, the gameplay is clumsy and slow, though I do like the cutscenes. I only paid $8 for it, so I don't feel particularly ripped off.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Bought this game because it was half price for this week on Xbox Live - the original price was the primary reason I didn't get it when it first came out. I used to play SF religiously in my teens, at the arcade and on my SNES, so it came as a bit of a surprise to find that I was thoroughly beaten by the computer when I began playing HD Remix. I blame the Xbox controller!

Incidentally, the last time I played SSF2T was on the 3DO, when I managed to get my hands on a 3DO Blaster (had to sweet talk my dad to upgrade the video card to make it work).

Thanks to a free 1-month Xbox Live Gold subscription, I snagged a couple of online Achievements last night:

Forza 3 - Selling a car online in the Auction House
Uno - Finish your first online multiplayer game
Heroes Over Europe - Fly every available plane type in the same multiplayer match

Heroes Over Europe (which I worked on) was quite a disappointment online, as there was no one playing. At all. Just me. Kinda sad, really. Also, a few of the online achievements involve having matches with 5 or more players. Considering I couldn't even get anyone else besides me to play means that I might have to give up on these ones.

Tinker - Part 2

Tinker is a puzzle game where you lead a robot to the exit while dealing with obstacles. I'm reminded of Adventures of Lolo on NES (video above), which isn't a bad thing. I played for thirty minutes last night, completing the tutorial levels and managing to score seven achievements in the process. Recommended, and the fact that's free doesn't hurt.

Virtua Fighter 5

I can't believe I'm still playing this game. Not that the game is bad - I love Virtua Fighter over Tekken or Dead or Alive. But the scope of this game makes me question my sanity. Some of the achievements involve fighting and defeating the various AI players that are scattered throughout the many arcades. I'm guessing that there are over 1000 AI players... and I plan to beat every single one of them. Eventually.

WWE Legends of Wrestlemania & 20K Gamerpoints

I hit the 20,000 Gamerpoint mark on the weekend by finishing WWE Legends of Wrestlemania. I enjoyed it more than the standard Smackdown Vs Raw series, but it's still not a patch on the old WCW/NWO Revenge game on N64 or the even older WWF Wrestlefest arcade game. If anyone's interested in comparing, wrestling games are a very good example of how graphics have evolved throughout the years.

Tinker - A Free Game for Windows

Halo 3 ODST - Part 2

Only had a spare ten minutes to play last night, but managed to find the last audio log and get the associated Achievement. I've resisted listening to these logs because I wanted to hear them all in one sitting - which I can do now. You can too, if you don't have the game.

I returned to ODST to tackle some Achievements. I got the "Killing things that are new and different is good" Achievement (by killing ten Engineers - guys who I didn't even know about until I got 3/4 through campaign mode) and attempted to find all of the audio logs. Tip - If you're using a map like me, mark off the ones you find! I did the rounds and was missing two, so I went around again and still couldn't figure out which two I missed. Thank the Internet for YouTube tutorials. I've got one last audio log to find, which requires me to replay the last campaign level.

I do love me some Halo, but I think Bungie/Microsoft should have kept to the original "Halo Recon" title rather than "ODST". If anything, it sets a nice naming convention (Halo Reach being the next game.) Kinda like how many Nintendo DS games have a subtitle playing on the "D" and "S".

Terminator Salvation - Part 2

I finished it on the weekend. It's short and underwhelming, but not completely unplayable. The first issue with it is the story - as a prequel to the actual film, it's not particularly interesting on its own (you go a rescue some people trapped in Skynet territory and that's it.) Next issue is its difficulty - it can be quite cheap at times. Best example of that is when you're hiding behind some cover, a Terminator comes and punches you for a one-hit kill - even though its not physically close enough to do so. I liked the turret sections though - but I'm a sucker for those.

Ultimately, I did enjoy it. It reminded me of older 8-bit/16-bit game design where every enemy had a certain strategy to deal with them and you just repeated that over and over again. Games have moved on since then, but its always nice to be reminded of how things were.

I started playing this after having read many negative reviews and comments. I have a soft spot for games with bad reputations (helps that they're cheap to buy most of the time). So far, it doesn't compare to Halo, but it's fairly competent. It has a lovely realtime loading screen of a very realistic close-up of a Terminator head. Too bad the main character doesn't look like Christian Bale.

I'm current stuck in what appears to be a boss fight against 2+1 Terminators. My teammate's making pipe bombs but they don't seem to do much. Neither do my other teammates, who seem to only shoot at the enemy when the enemy is targeting me (which, on second thought, is quite smart of them if self-preservation is their goal). Your teammates are quite effective in normal gameplay though, so let them do the work.

I completed all of the achievements for Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (Sonic's Genesis Ultimate Collection in the US) last night. The last three achievements in the queue were the ones for The Story of Thor, Sonic Spinball and the Play all Mega Drive games one, which involved me loading and quitting each of the 30+ games.

Streets of Rage is still great. Yuzo Koshiro's music hasn't aged at all. I do have to ask why Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer weren't on the disc, especially since Shinobi III was included. And Decap Attack is not a patch on its Japanese original Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure (one of the first MD games I owned).

Also, I wouldn't bother with the widescreen option (which just stretches the picture) and the smoothing option either (the results of which never reach 'better', instead ranging from 'different' to 'shocking'.)

10,000 Gamerpoints

I'm going on record now to say that the best game of this generation is... Xbox 360 Achievements and Gamerpoints. It's basically a real-life RPG for people like me that stupidly enjoy increasing numbers.

I hit 10,000 Gamerpoints a few days ago. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 tipped me over, having completed the Downed but Not Out Achievement using two controllers and my feet.

The Legend of Zelda - Molblin's Magic Spear DS/Video

Video Game Print Ads from 1990's Comic Books

I scanned a bunch of retro game ads that appeared in various comic books from the 1990's - back when I was obsessed with polybags, backing boards, variant covers and keeping things mint (good times!).

To advertise a game back then, you needed to:

Use a pun or double-meaning; or
Note the game's technical prowess

While modern ads today don't really do much of (1) anymore, we still see lots of (2), which is kinda sad. Ten years on, the market is still being driven by graphics, not gameplay. Oh well.

Looking back at these ads, I was surprised that:

Some of the games even existed (i.e. never heard of them before)
Some of the games look quite good (i.e. might be worth tracking down and trying)
A lot of text to describe/explain the game
Acclaim did a lot of comic book advertising, which might help explain why they ended up buying Valiant Comics (who owned Turok, Shadowman, etc.)

A disc that contains a saved replay that can be transferred onto your memory card and watched in Gran Turismo 3's Replay Theater mode. I assume that the replay (or replays) highlight the Autobacs Toyota 2000 Apex MR-S GT car - "assume" that is, because my PS2 no longer reads CDs :(

UPDATE: It's not a saved replay after all - it's a rolling demo.

Gunstar Heroes, Bare Knuckle 2 & The Super Shinobi II (PC)

Windows versions of Megadrive games Gunstar Heroes, Bare Knuckle 2 (Streets of Rage 2) and The Super Shinobi II (Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master) by Sega. They are basically ROMs embedded inside a Sega-authored MD emulator. A bit disappointing as I was hoping for a true PC conversion. As far as the emulation goes, I didn't notice anything wonky. There's a graphics-smoothing option and it has support for save-states, but any MD emulator available on the Net has far more functionality.

Suffice to say, I was very disappointed. I got it effectively for free (using my points card and it was only 500 yen), but I've learned my lesson - read the box properly next time!

A DSi with Kingdom Hearts Case and Gyakuten Kenji Strap

I couldn't afford the special edition Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days DSi, so I bought the Hori protective case instead. Note that the correct way to pronounce it is "Kingdom Hearts Three-Five-Eight Days Over Two" - which still doesn't make any sense. Got the Gyakuten Kenji strap from a gashapon machine for 200 yen.

Shin Onimusha Dawn of Dreams The Story Premium Box

This DVD-Video edits the gameplay and cutscenes from Shin Onimusha Dawn of Dreams (AKA Onimusha 4) together into a 2-hour film. The disc contains the film, additional trailers and selections from the soundtrack. The bonus disc is a PS2 CD containing one maxed-out save file for the game. At 311KB, an entire disc for just a save file seems like such a waste. Capcom make a habit out of making these machinima game-films, with Okami, Resident Evil 4 and others also available. No English, unfortunately.

Seaman 2 Controller

Seaman 2 for PS2 has a custom controller that comes with a built-in mic - the rather long thing in the middle of it. I picked this up from a junk bin for 315 yen ($4) because it was USB and thus XP compatible. I'd been looking for a controller with a three-buttons-across layout suitable for my Megadrive/Saturn emulation needs and this controller works smashingly. You can remove the mic as well to make it less phallic.

Pachislot Hokuto no Ken Special Edition (PS2)

This is the special edition version of Pachislot Hokuto no Ken Special Edition for PS2, released only in Japan. The SE comes packaged in a record-style book case, a bonus DVD containing a playthrough of the game, and a book featuring artwork and notes. Why a slot machine game needs a special edition is beyond me, but since I picked it up for 100 yen ($1), my curiosity has been satisfied.

Tomb Raider: Hell's Fury - Thoughts on a Lara Croft/Carmen Sandiego Crossover

"What happens when two women want the same thing?"

Kotaku had a competition involving making a cover for an imaginary Tomb Raider game. This gave me an opportunity to think about an idea which I've had for some time: a crossover game starring Lara Croft and Carmen Sandiego.

Why would this game work? Let me share my reasons.

Mainstream Appeal - When it comes to video game characters that have crossed over into the mainstream, Lara Croft and Carmen Sandiego are up there with Mario and Pac-Man. Tomb Raider has the very public face of Angelina Jolie and two successful films, and Carmen Sandiego had a children's TV game show that ran for 5 seasons.

Successful Franchises - The original Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? is the mother of all edutainment games, having debuted in 1985, spawning sequels and spin-offs ever since. Tomb Raider and its sequels were key titles for the PlayStation and PS2, with the latest in the series having just been released (Tomb Raider Underworld, 2008).

CARMEN: "Me? A petty thief? And I suppose tomb raiding is a respectable line of work? Perhaps 'grave robber' is a more accurate description... and that means you are the same as me, my dear little thief."

Story and Character Dynamics - If we treat Carmen Sandiego not as a cartoon villian but as a criminal mastermind, we have a strong counterpoint to Lara Croft. You have the simple good guy bad guy angle, the older woman / younger woman clash, and the argument of what Lara does (as a "tomb raider") versus what Carmen does (as a "thief"). When approached with a serious and dark tone, both of these characters offer plenty of dramatic conflict.

Complimentary Game Styles - Designer Bruce Shelley said once that he believes that the only reason that kids nowadays know what a "trebuchet" is, is because of Age of Empires. While Carmen Sandiego games are first and foremost educational titles, and a stark difference to the action/adventure of Tomb Raider, the bringing of educational elements into the standard Tomb Raider experience need not be heavy-handed. Treating "education" in the context of a puzzle (which Tomb Raider has many of) would bring enough of Carmen to Tomb Raider.

"Famed archaeologist Lara Croft is asked to retrieve the ancient Hell's Fury Mirror from the depths of the Amazon jungle by a mysterious benefactor - infamous master criminal Carmen Sandiego. Lara is tricked into doing Carmen's dirty work and then betrayed. Can she find Carmen and reclaim the Mirror before it is lost forever?"

And for the nitty-gritty, it's a Tomb Raider game, so there's jumping and shooting in third-person. You probably shouldn't play as Carmen, or if you do, only for a level or two. Plus there's yet another chance for Eidos to get another Lara Croft model, and the world is dying for some real-life Carmen action too.

So what do you think?

PS. It turns out that Carmen Sandiego is now owned by The Learning Company, but their logo is kinda crap, so I didn't bother updating the mock cover.

An Apology to insani

insani contacted me recently about Fate/stay night Trial Edition (Abridged for DS). They are unhappy with the way that I used their English translation, specifically in regards to the editing that I did. The editing was done for purely technical reasons (in that I could not fit the entire translation onto the DS and thus had to cut some of it out). These edits were in no way a criticism of the quality of the translation and I am sorry for any offense caused.

I have removed the download links to the game, and I ask that any third-party sites that have the game to remove it as well.

I made this for a friend. It's a Sexy Blackjack Trainer variant based on the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Same game but with appropriate graphics and music - play blackjack, win points and unlock pictures.

Recommended if you like both blackjack and Haruhi Suzumiya; or you're a Multiple:Option collector :) That said, I'm not counting this as an official M:O release - it's a side project and what you see is what you get. Use No$GBA if you're emulating.

My new film is the follow-up to The Most Powerful Person in the World. It deals with a similar theme: video games aren't the bane of society. While the previous film was a self-described "love letter," promoting the good of games, the new film is a direct response to all the video game critics. The critics argue that games are "bad," but their arguments are the same as the ones that were thrown at music, movies, comics and everything new that the previous generation doesn't (or refuse) to understand.

Pippin Video Blowout! Part 3 & Final Thoughts

The last of my Pippin videos, today we'll have a look at the CDs that came with the system itself. These aren't particularly interesting (as pack-in discs usually go), but they are worth posting.

The first video is of the PEASE disc. It has a bunch of Mac games and utilities. It's a Mac disc through and through, loading you straight into the MacOS GUI (complete with the Mac boot jigsaw icons, if you know what I'm referring to?) The games are mostly clones (Tetris, Space Invaders) but there are a few original Mac games (shareware, weirdly enough). If you weren't holding the controller, you'd swear you were just looking at an ordinary Mac.

My last video is of the Pippin Title CD-ROM Catalog Vol. 1, which is self-explanatory. Going through the catalog, you'll note that most Pippin titles are edutainment, reflecting its Mac background. Nothing really surprising in terms of games, but it's interesting to see the number of announced titles - far more than I've ever expected or seen (in real life or otherwise). I have no idea whether all of these were actually released or not. Sadly no demos were included on the disc.

Final Thoughts
So, should you get yourself a Pippin? No, unless you are a console collector or a Mac collector. For your average gamer, the Pippin offers no stand-out exclusive titles worth playing. The console is heavy, and the controller is awkward. The hardware and software are difficult to track down, and frankly you'll spend a lot of time for little gain. It isn't worth it.

Don't think I'm completely down on the Pippin though. There are two things I quite like about it:

Internationalized hardware - Not only is the Pippin 100v-240v power capable, it also outputs NTSC/PAL and VGA with a simple switch on the back on the console. Lovely.
Pippin technology licensing - Like the 3DO (though not in reality), the Pippin tech was meant to be licensed to other companies. So we could have had a Sony Pippin, a Sharp Pippin, a Panasonic Pippin, etc. I firmly believe in the tech licensing idea, and hope that one day Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo embrace it whole-heartedly.

And thus ends the tale of the Apple Bandai Pippin Atmark.

Pippin Video Blowout! Part 2

Part 2 of my Pippin Video Blowout! focuses on the games. Not many were made, and most were of so-so quality. If you can imagine (or remember, if you're old enough) games that were made in the 1990's when the word multimedia was the rage, then you'll know exactly what these were like.

The first video is Racing Days for Pippin (Kitt Peak Inc., 1995-1996). A racing game with a poor framerate, one camera view, two race modes, three tracks and five cars. Pretty bad now, and would not have impressed in 1995, considering Ridge Racer on PS1 was available during the same time period. Does allow the player to repaint the car with the in-game texture editor, which is nice; and also has network play.

The second video is Power Rangers Zeo vs. The Machine Empire (Bandai, 1996). A side-scrolling action game with a poor framerate (again). Live-action FMVs introduce each level, with acting on par with that of the Power Rangers TV show. For an action game, controls are woefully imprecise. Attack animations tend to push you back, causing your punch or kick to fall short of the target. Simply frustrating. Yuk.

The last video is of Gundam Tactics ~Mobility Fleet 0079~ (Bandai, 1996). A strategy game based on Gundam, I have completely no idea how to play it. Granted, it's all in Japanese, but there isn't any obvious "attack" or "defend" buttons. I did manage to move my units, and eventually die, so that's something. Nice pre-rendered attack animations. I suspect it might be a good game, but I'll reserve my judgment until such time as I figure out what's going on.

Pippin Video Blowout! Part 1

A bunch of Pippin videos I captured for prosperity. But before that, you ask, what is an Apple Bandai Pippin Atmark? From Wikipedia: "The Apple Pippin was a multimedia platform marketed by Apple Inc. (then Apple Computer Inc.) in the mid 1990s. It was based around a 66-MHz PowerPC 603 processor, a 14.4 kbit/s modem and ran a stripped version of the System 7.5.2. The goal was to create an inexpensive computer aimed mostly at playing CD-based multimedia titles, especially games, but also functioning as a network computer. It featured a 4× CD-ROM drive and a video output that could connect to a standard television monitor."

It was something like this:
Apple = 3DO Company
Bandai = Panasonic
Pippin Atmark = 3DO FZ-1

The first video is the Pippin's boot sequence. Nothing fancy. It repeats until you insert a CD.

The second video is the Pippin's CD player. Looks a lot like the Sega Saturn's CD player, except without the animating starfield or the spaceship. Static and dull, but gets the job done. Note that the Pippin has standard CD buttons (play, stop, etc.) on the hardware itself, so no need to have the TV on and/or use the controller.

Haven't seen any new ones lately on the web, so I took a few.

An Xbox and a Pippin side by side, like ebony and ivory.

The white Pippin gently mounts the black Xbox in what can only be described as "digital jungle fever."

Controllers side by side. Note the trackball and the button colors, which have been flipped and reversed.

I whipped up this quick (perhaps cheap and nasty) screen saver featuring a bunch of ships from horizontal shoot'em ups (or shmups, a term I don't really like). They fly across the starfield calmly, as if waiting for you to insert some coins to begin their suicide mission against the enemy armada...

It was made in Flash and runs on XP/Vista, and probably other flavours of Windows. Read the readme.txt for more info and a list of the games I stole from.

If Thunderbird and Nintendogs had a love child, this would be it. PostPet is a graphical email program where emails are received and delivered by a virtual pet that you take care of. If your friend also has PostPet, their pet will come to your virtual house and deliver the email, and then interact with your pet. Forget to take care of your pet, and it'll get angry, and may even refuse to deliver your emails!
